What is agape love?

John 13:34“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

35“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”


Love, agape, an unconditional love coined only to describe Gods love. No other word came close to describing the love of God. The grecian language used 3 other words for love: storgi, eros, & phileo. All fall short of agape. Then Jesus says, the world, that is void of agape, will know you are My disciples by this agape you have been given and now you offer. Phileo, or brotherly love, wont change this world. Eros, or romantic love wont draw men to Christ. Storgi, affectionate love wont bring man into relationship with Jesus. Only as the world witnesses this unconditional agape love, will it ever truely experience the depths of Gods love for them. Agape pours out compassion even when its not deserved. This is how we are to be toward those fallen in this world, not because their sin is okayed, but to declare to them, a bridge and a hope out of their sin and into the open arms of Jesus.
